
American baritone Todd Thomas is establishing himself with companies and journalists worldwide as a true Verdi baritone. Following his recent triumph in Puccini’s Tosca at the New York City Opera, The New York Times wrote, “It also helped the Scarpia was sung by Todd Thomas in a vocally assured and dramatically charged performance, full of all the smugness and lustful rapacity that the role demands.” Opera News agreed complimenting a recent Macbeth performance, “Todd Thomas was warm and centered in his tone with subtle phrasing that emphasized the introspective, almost poetic quality of the tormented king.” Additionally in Verdi’s masterworks, Mr. Thomas had tremendous success as the title role of Falstaff and Di Luna in il Trovatore with Seattle Opera under Maestro Gerard Schwartz, and Yves Abel, Nabucco for Todi Music Fest U.S.A., Macbeth for Connecticut Grand Opera and Syracuse Opera, as well as Iago in Otello and Amonasro in Aida. Furthermore, his Germont from La Traviata which has been heard in Europe and Asia, as well as throughout the United States has secured him a place in the long lineage of Amercan Verdi baritones.
Last season Mr Thomas enjoyed great success in his debut with the Arizona Opera as Iago in Verdi’s Otello. He added Padre Miller (Luisa Miller) with the Chautauqua Opera to his growing repertoire of the Verdian Baritone repertoire. Following his work with The Lyric Opera of Chicago in Verdi’s Macbeth and Un Balla in Maschera, he won high accolades for his portrayal of Rigoletto with the Michigan Opera Theater. In hi is return engagement with Opera Omaha Todd was privileged to sing Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in the highly acclaimed production designed by Jun Kanenko. He appears again in this production in Early 2012 with Opera Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The current 2011-12 season will find the baritone in return engagements with the Arizona and Nashville Opera Companies in performances of Cavaleria Rusticana by Mascagni and I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. He will sing di Luna in il Trovatore for Grand Rapids Opera in Ocotebr of 2011. In addition to concert appearances in Omaha, Nebraska and Montclair, New Jersey (Parrables by Bob Aldredge) he will add the Canadian opera company, Opera Lyra, in Ottawa, Canada when he will bow as Scapria in Puccini’s Tosca. Pensacola, Florida audiences eagerly await to hear Todd again in the spring, as the tormented and deformed court jester, in Pensacola Operas spring production of Verdi’s Rigoletto.
Mr. Thomas has appeared in more than 50 performances with the Sarasota Opera including Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West, Ezio in Attilla, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Scarpia in Tosca, as well the title characters of Falstaff, Nabucco and Macbeth. Also a house favorite with Nashville Opera, he has sung such standards in the repertoire as the title role in Rigoletto, Tonio in I Pagliacci, as well as a stunning production of Peter Maxwell Davies’ The Lighthouse. Summer opera seasons have been full with appearance with the Chautauqua Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera and Opera North.
As a recital and concert artist, Mr. Thomas has appeared on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In a European tour of I Pagliacci, he performed Tonio in Fiesole, Pisa, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Sarlat, Luzerne, and Utrecht. Likewise, for nearly 20 seasons he has been a soloist for the Ocean City Pops Orchestra in New Jersey, as well as multiple return engagements with orchestras nationwide, including the touring divisions of Houston Grand Opera and San Francisco Opera.
